Description
Grand Valley State University’s School Psychology Program is jointing
with the College of Education to host the screening of the
documentary, Intelligent Lives. The film stars three pioneering young
American adults with intellectual disabilities –Micah, Naieer, and
Naomie –who challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate
high school, college, and the workforce. Academy Award-winning actor
and narrator Chris Cooper contextualizes the lives of these central
characters through the emotional story of his son Jesse, as the film
unpacks the shameful and ongoing track record of intelligence testing
in the U.S.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Emily
Perton, the Executive Director of the Ready for Life Academy at Hope
College and Calvin University, and Peggy Fakler, the Executive
Director of the Arc/Advocacy and Resource Center in Ottawa County. The
screening and discussion is free and open to the public. Light
refreshments will be provided.
