City: Detroit, MI
Major: Education
Year in Freshman Academy: 2008

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan I attended Lewis Cass Technical High School and graduated at the top of my class. Recognizing my leadership abilities at such a very young age I decided to join so many organizations that allowed me to get accepted to Grand Valley State University. Some of the organizations that I participated in were Choir, Drama, Counselors, and National Honor Society. Through the National Honor Society I was the Treasurer my senior year 2008. When I graduated from Cass, I went to Grand Valley and joined the Freshmen Academy Program as well as the Office of Multicultural Affairs MTEC program for teaching.

With these two programs I was well acquainted with many faculty/staff and peers. These programs allowed me to see my potential and enhanced my leadership abilities. I was introduced to a program called M Power, which is offered through Grand Valley State University Trio Program. With this program I worked with many students all over Grand Rapids area and served as a mentor to students to help them discover their vocation. I worked with remarkable teachers in these schools which enhanced my knowledge and ability of working with inner-city students. In these schools, I worked with my mentor, the Late Santiago Zapata Jr. and we worked with many 6th graders sharing the importance of obtaining a college education.

Upon attending meetings with the OMA office, I was introduced to the COMPASS Program through the College of Education Program. This program is designed to help underrepresented students at Grand Valley get accepted and graduate from the College of Education program. I now serve as a mentor to many of the students at Grand Valley and display leadership abilities as I share my experiences with my peers. I made history! I am the first African American Student to get accepted into the College of Education Program from the COMPASS Program. This was a remarkable experience to encounter when I accepted my Achievement of the Year Award that was presented to me from the Dean of College of Education, Dean Elaine Collins.

I am now currently, Teacher assisting in the Wyoming School District where I serve as a mentor to 64 sixth graders. The experiences that I have encountered thus far have been rewarding. I am looking forward to Student Teaching in the Fall 2013 and Graduating by December 2013. When God has a plan and a purpose for your life, you need to obey, because the reward of you being diligent and following your passion will take you so much further. I am grateful for the experiences that I've encountered thus far, because it has shaped me into the young woman that I am today.
