Benefits of a Grand Valley Education

Grand Valley graduates can listen, read, talk, write, solve problems, lead, and work in a community. But most importantly, Grand Valley graduates can connect with others and the greater community. Our graduates pair their critical thinking skills and self-knowledge to connect their formal training, emotions, past experiences, values, and traditions with those of others.

Grand Valley attracts outstanding professors from the U.S. and around the world who love to teach. Our faculty members are actively engaged in the fields they teach, which enhances your learning in the classroom. Every class is taught by a faculty member, not a graduate assistant, assuring you the highest quality of teaching in the classroom and providing undergraduate students with opportunities to collaborate on professional research and creative practice that are only available to graduate students at other schools.

In addition to the classroom component, Grand Valley attracts professors that are leaders in their fields. Grand Valley is home to several research facilities that engage in high-level research, but also engage the local business communities. Here are a few examples of these research centers:

  • AWRI – The Annis Water Research Institute sponsors research on all issues affecting water access, water cleanliness, and water borne invasive species. Students pursuing studies in biology have the option to work with a faculty member at AWRI on their research project.
  • MAREC – The Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center houses a business incubator and research facilities to enhance energy efficiencies.
  • MASL – Mobile Application and Services Laboratory developed over 15 apps for iOS and Android mobile phones in over two years.
  • Seidman Business Services – The Seidman College of Business houses several state, federal and private organizations dedicated to helping the local business community in Grand Rapids.

Grand Valley also encourages undergraduate students to conduct research and even sponsors research grants for undergraduate students. The Students Summer Scholars program provides $6,000 grants for summer research with Grand Valley faculty members. For more information, visit -
