Accounting Alumni Chapter Mentor Program

One of the goals the Accounting Alumni & Friends Organization determined would be a top priority was to develop a mentoring program. Alums Renee Thelen (Perrigo) and Lindsay Busman (Crowe Horwath) developed the framework for the new program and enlisted other alums to help with the pilot program. Emily Quinley, Crowe Horwath and Victoria Schnaidt, Plante Moran, have since taken over as program supervisors.

The first mentor-student match-up was done during the winter 2008 semester, with five mentors and five students paired up to get the program off to a successful start. By Fall 2016 semester, the number of mentors increased to 25 professionals to match with students. Student interest remains very high and the Accounting Alumni Chapter is pleased with the response from students and volunteer mentors.

The program consists of four meetings, the first of which is a pizza social where students and mentors meet for the first time. Mentors and students will meet at least three additional times throughout the semester, giving students an opportunity to directly learn about the opportunities offered in the accounting profession. The Alumni group hopes this program will continue to expand to be able to reach as many students as possible.
