The Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Elementary Teaching (PCKET) major develops teachers with strong subject knowledge, a commitment to interdisciplinary teaching, support for diverse learners, and lifelong learning objectives.
PCKET is designed for those seeking teacher certification at the elementary level. Students will pair this major with the Educational Studies or Special Education major. In addition, students can earn endorsements in ESL and/or a concentration in core disciplines.
The program offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines disciplinary content knowledge with pedagogical training and pre-service field experiences. You will take courses in fine arts, social studies, integrated science, English language arts, mathematics, and health and physical education, ensuring a well-rounded preparation for your teaching career.
The PKCET program is customizable to your specific areas of study, guided by Grand Valley professors who are experts in their subject areas and content pedagogy. You will have opportunities to participate in professional organizations, engage in service learning in local schools, and become an active community member. Study abroad programs fit seamlessly into the curriculum, allowing you to gain international teaching experience and earn a Certificate of International Teaching.
