At Grand Valley, students can customize their biology degree by specializing in genetics, ecology and evolutionary biology, general studies for preprofessional programs, or teacher certification. Students work closely with faculty, throughout the program, to gain a broader insight into the field.
Your degree includes coursework in animal and plant biology, cell and molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and genetics, along with lab and field experience. You will receive hands-on, student-focused, and project-based learning from expert faculty in state-of-the-art lab and field facilities. You are strongly advised to consult either the CLAS Academic Advising Center or the Biology Department for guidance on which BIO courses to complete to satisfy the State Standards for Teaching Biology and to prepare for the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in biology.
Alongside coursework, you can take advantage of internships, international and domestic field studies, and mentor-guided research. Networking opportunities with faculty, peers, alumni, professional organizations, and industry stakeholders help you build valuable connections within the field. The program offers many research opportunities, allowing you to engage in real-world applications through meaningful projects. Graduates go on to successful careers in conservation, ecology, zoology, and teaching, and many pursue graduate studies in veterinary and human medicine.
