Combined Degree: Public and Nonprofit Administration, B.A., B.S. and Public Administration, M.P.A.

Grand Valley State University combined degree programs offer current qualified undergraduate students the opportunity to complete both an undergraduate and graduate degree, meeting personal, academic, and career goals. A combined degree can reduce the cost and total time required to complete both.

Program Overview

Qualified undergraduates may be admitted to the program and obtain a bachelor's degree in public and nonprofit administration and a master's degree in public administration within an accelerated time frame. Students admitted to this program may take graduate courses after completing 90 undergraduate credits, and up to 12 credits of graduate work may be used in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the undergraduate degree.

Undergraduates may apply to the program after reaching junior standing or 75 credit hours, with at least 30 hours completed at GVSU; a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or above; completion of required coursework with a B or better; and completion of PNH 520 - Foundations of Public Service taken during the fifth or sixth semester with a B or better. Students must meet with the MPA graduate program director prior to applying to the program. Application requirements:

Location & Format

Undergraduate students in this major study at Grand Valley's Allendale Campus. Graduate courses are a combination of online and in-seat on the Robert C. Pew Grand Rapids Campus.

Coursework

The following courses will be used towards completion of the combined degree:

  • PNH 520 (required) as an additional elective
  • PNH 612 for PNH 376
  • PNH 614 for PNH 420
  • PNH 535, 630, 660, 641 or 620 as an elective option

All combined degree students will be required to take one, three-credit hour graduate-level internship. This is in addition to the undergraduate internship requirement.

Admission Requirements

Students will normally apply for the combined B.S./M.P.A. program during their third academic year.
