Program Overview

The cannabis operations and community planning certificate utilizes interdisciplinary study to prepare students to work in the retail cannabis industry or ancillary fields. Those interested in non-profit and/or governmental intersections with cannabis operations, as well as efforts at achieving social equity, will also gain a wider understanding of this developing industry.

This certificate is open and available to currently enrolled GVSU students by selecting it in Banner. Nondegree-seeking students can be admitted into the certificate by contacting the Hospitality and Tourism Management department.

Admissions

For new students, visit the Admissions website for undergraduate requirements. Upon acceptance and for current students:

  • Declare your certificate via myBanner (Login to Banner Self-Service, click on Student, Student Records, Add a Certificate or Badge to your Program, Select the appropriate certificate from the drop down list, and click Submit)
  • Speak with the appropriate certificate coordinator to ensure criteria are being met (you will be able to track your progress toward the certificate in myPath as well!)
  • Once you are done with the requirements, apply to receive the certificate via myBanner.
  • Once the completion of your certificate has been verified, the certificate will be posted to your student record and will be viewable on your transcript.

Coursework

The interdisciplinary certificate is a total of 15 credits:

  • HTM 117 - Retail Customer Service
  • HTM 217 - Cannabis and Culture
  • HTM 242 - Cannabis Regulations and Tourism
  • HTM 290 or HTM 390 - HTM Field Experience I or II
  • HTM 317 - Responsible Cannabis Retail Operations

Complete one course from the following:

  • CJ 101 - Introduction to Criminal Justice
  • SW 150 - Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare
  • PNH 209 - Introduction to Urban and Regional Planning
  • SOC 252 - Sociology of Drug Use and Abuse

This certificate can be completed online.
