Department of Writing

Welcome to the GVSU Department of Writing

Department Chair Patricia Clark

I'm delighted to welcome visitors to our web page who are interested in the writing major. Rich opportunities await anyone choosing this major from working as a web designer, writing a novel, or becoming an editor, to designing documents, finding a job in publishing, or collaborating on a play. Our curriculum builds flexible skills to help you in many entry-level positions and to serve you for a life full of learning, reading, and writing. The Writing Department curriculum is among the most progressive in the country, offering unique opportunities for you to shape the 42 credits of the writing major

The Writing Department affords many additional opportunities to round out a major or minor in Writing. We have a vibrant student reading series, a student-run literary journal, a bi-annual student-written department newsletter, and clubs and organizations dedicated exclusively to writing. The department hosts one of West Michigans best visiting writer series in which we invite professional authors to visit courses, host discussions and craft talks, and deliver all-campus readings of their work. Recent visiting authors have included Roxane Gay, David Shields, and Steven Johnson, to name a few. Finally, our Distinction in Writing program encourages you to pursue extra-curricular activities to set you apart as a writer and young professional by gaining expertise in such areas as writing for publication, for performance, and in off-campus communities.
