AWRI Newsletter #16: March 2003

March started with the second visit of our Science Advisory Board and ends with AWRI beginning to prepare for the Great Lakes Legacy Act kick-off meeting, scheduled for April 25th at the Lake Michigan Center. The Science Advisory Board met for two days in early March, heard presentations from staff, and will be providing us with a report in the near future of their findings. The Great Lakes Legacy Act, passed by the U.S. Congress last fall, authorizes $270 million for cleaning up contaminated sediments in Great Lakes "toxic hot spots". The meeting will feature presentations from the Act's Congressional sponsors and the federal, state, and local agencies responsible for its implementation. Another AWRI highlight is the appointment of Dr. Janet Vail to MDEQ's environmental advisory council; Janet is one of only 24 people from throughout the state selected to this important and prestigious council.
