Women, Media & The Art of Inquiry: Invisible War

The Women’s Center mission is to create meaningful learning about women and gender and to advocate for gender justice through the education, engagement, and empowerment of students and the greater GVSU community.  This media series, followed by meaningful dialogue, will provide an opportunity to look at gender justice through a feminist lens.  Light snacks and comfortable seating will be available!

Topic: Sexual Assault

The month of April has been designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in the United States. The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.

By working together and pooling our resources during the month of April, we can highlight sexual violence as a major public health, human rights and social justice issue and reinforce the need for prevention efforts.

GVSU will be showing The Invisible War on Thursday, April 4^th , 6:00pm in KC 2215/2216, Allendale.  Following the film we will host a panel discussion. Panelist are:

--Dr. Rita Kenyon-Jump, Clinical Psychologist and Military Sexual Trauma Coordinator  from Kalamazoo

--Gloria Newmiller, women Veterans counselor from Grand Rapids

--Keri Becker, GVSU staff and Army Reserve

The Invisible War is a film that presents the distressing problems of sexual assault in the United States military. ‘The Defense Department estimates that 22,800 violent sex crimes were committed in the military last year alone, and the filmmakers calculate that 1 in 5 women in military service has been the victim of sexual assault. The Invisible War presents other numbers, mostly from the military’s own records, that make the picture of pervasive abuse even more alarming. Many crimes are never reported’. New York Times
