Women's Issues Volunteer Corps

The Women's Center is currently looking for students, faculty, and staff who are interested in working on projects within the community which have a focus on improving the lives of women and girls and helping to fulfill our mission of "making a difference in the lives of women and girls through volunteer opportunities that pair education with activism."

Q. What kinds of projects do you work on?
A. The WIVC focuses on opportunities that improve the lives of women and girls in surrounding communities. We look for opportunities that pair education with activism.

Q. How do I get involved in a semester long project?
A. Stop by the Women's Center and fill out a volunteer interest sheet. After you have filled out the sheet, set up a time to meet with the volunteer coordinator.

Q. Where do I volunteer?
A. There are three opportunities for students to volunteer.  1. Students can volunteer on campus at Women's Center programs; 2. Volunteers can design activists projects such as letter writing campiangs, to educate the greater campus community, or; 3. Volunteers can volunteer at a local agency such as: 
YWCA--Domestic Crisis Shelter, YWCA--Girls Space, Girl Scouts, Child and Family Resource Council, The Lesbian and Gay Network

Q. How many hours per week will I have to commit to?
A. Most semester long volunteer opportunities are very flexible and will require a one- to two-hour commitment per week for the student.


Q. Will I have to attend weekly meetings?
A. No, the WIVC is a program within the Women's Center. All volunteers are encouraged strongly to participate in a Volunteer Orientation. If volunteering in a community agency, the orientation is required.

Q. Can I volunteer as part of a class assignment?
A. Yes! We work with professors in many majors to find opportunities that will fulfill your classroom requirement.

Q. How do I get started?
A. Stop into the Women's Center, located in 161 Kirkhof, to fill out an interest sheet and set up a time to meet with the volunteer coordinator.

Q. Once I have started, do I need to document my hours?
A. Yes, all volunteers are asked to register their hours through the BlackBoard system. Once volunteers go through training, they will be given access to Women's Center Volunteer BlackBoard account.

Q. How do I find out what opportunities are available through the Women's Center?
A. Registered volunteers will receive an email update every other week with notifications and new volunteer opportunities.
