West Michigan Interprofessional Education Initiative (WMIPEI)
The Institute of Medicine (IOM 2003) report Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality now followed by the 2011 Interprofessional Education Collaborative Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice and the Institute of Healthcare Improvement's Triple Aim, are central in informing the restructuring of health care education curricula and practice. In response to this call for healthcare reform, the West Michigan Interprofessional Health Education Initiative (WMIPEI) was formed in 2007 with founding members Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners, and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Through this initiative, interprofessional education, practice philosophies and expectations are being institutionalized in regional educational programs and health care services. Structured questions will also be used to facilitate small group discussions for participants to share their experiences and best practices in interprofessional education and collaborative practice.
The goals of WMIPEI are: (1) integrate interprofessional learning throughout the curricula, (2) identify, develop, implement and assess interprofessional clinical experiences for teams of students to practice and learn about, from and with each other, and (3) implement interprofessional scholarship across discipline and institutions. The WMIPEI model of interprofessional education was developed as a result.
Safety Culture Transformation Study
This study was designed as a component of an educational and practice partnership to promote patient safety education and interprofessional practice by Grand Valley State University in partnership with Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners. The purpose of the study was to address a critical element of care delivery and the need for health professionals to communicate effectively in the provision of safe, quality, patient-centered care. This educational safety program was developed for undergraduate nursing students, physician assistant students, third year medical students, residents and clinicians on the pilot unit.
Testing an Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Model to Improve Obesity-Related Health Outcomes with a Statewide Consortium
The West Michigan Interprofessional Education Initiative is committed to promoting the vision of interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) in the region. Working with Grand Valley State University, Wayne State University, Michigan Health Council, Mi-AHEC and Michigan Department of Community Health as the awardees, comes a collaborative venture, Testing an Interprofessional Model to Improve Obesity-related Health Outcomes with a Statewide Consortium. In an effort to inform other institutions and health care settings of metrics to evaluate those efforts, listed below are selected evaluation tools that are being used by grant sponsored IPCP evaluators nationwide. These tools are divided into subgroups for your review.
