During the summer months, our service is limited due to the reduced student population, however we still offer our core services.

Beginning Fall 2011, and offered periodically throughout the 2011-2012 academic calendar, GVSU student veterans have a unique opportunity to work with Brooks college faculty and Writing Center administration on their personal and academic writing projects.  Working from a peer writing group model, attendees will discuss their writing and writing process, attain feedback on their projects, and gain tools to help them succeed in future writing. Coffee and snacks will also be provided.

]]> http://www.gvsu.edu/wc/module-news-view.htm?newsId=0F374DAF-F107-95A0-A89D15736AC80EDD Patrick Johnson Joins Center as Assistant Director 2011-02-08 00:00:00.0 The Fred Meijer Center for Writing & Michigan Authors has hired Patrick Johnson as full- time assistant director to begin on July 1, 2010.



Pat brings with him much experience he gained working in a nationally-recognized writing program at Washington State University. He has been a tutor, an English instructor, and a Writing Center Administrator and said, “I hope to apply my skills from all three to my new position.”

He also has extensive experience with on-line tutoring and has been the e-Tutoring coordinator for the past four years at Washington State.


From his brief visit to Grand Vally in the fall, Patrick was encouraged by the university's support of the writing center. He said, “I was amazed at the level of validation the program has within the school, and I am excited to enter that kind of supportive culture.”

]]> http://www.gvsu.edu/wc/module-news-view.htm?newsId=4B8DC9FA-D7EE-F358-8989141E14C55766 Writing Consultants Present at Regional Conference 2011-02-04 00:00:00.0 Every year a plethora of writing consultants flock to the East Central Writing Center Association's (ECWCA) annual conference to share new practices and research findings related to writing centers. This year the conference will be hosted by Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI and will run from March 4 - 5. Director & Associate Professor of Writing Ellen Schendel, Affliliate Professor of Writing Julie White, and fourteen writing consultants will be among the presenters.



The conference is one venue for writing consultants to gain new insights into writing center theory and practice, generate ideas for prospective research, evaluate Grand Valley's practices in comparison to other universities, and experience making professional presentations at a scholarly conference.



This year, consultants from Grand Valley will make presentations on topics like:


  • including techniques for incorporating positive feedback into consultations

  • applying revision techniques of published writers to writing center consultations

  • increasing writing center and library collaborations to help student writers

  • exploring how writing consultations can increase student-writers' self-efficacy


Writing consultant Kiera Wilson--a veteran presenter at ECWCA--looks forward to the conference every year because, "It's an amazing opportunity to network. It's also always an ego boost for all of us because of the progressive work that GVSU is doing in this field."
