Student Research Internship Program

GVSU – GRMEP Health Professions Student

Grand Valley State University and Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners have partnered to offer an internship program designed to provide graduate and undergraduate (junior or senior) level students in GVSU Health Professions, Social Work, Psychology, and Professional Science masters programs the opportunity to work closely with a research mentor on a project of scholarly interest.  The goal of this program is to introduce graduate students to the basic concepts of the design, implementation, interpretation and presentation of clinical and/or basic science research. At the end of the internship, students will give an oral presentation about their experience.

Program Details:  This program is competitive, based on grades, recommendations, previous experience, and a personal meeting/phone interview. Students are expected to work the awarded hours per week for the eight weeks duration of the internship, so participation in this program may not be compatible with working at another job.

Program Timeline:  The internships will be eight weeks research experience based on the time availability and awarded hours per week of the applicant.

Selection Process:  Completed applications are reviewed by a committee comprised of local researchers. Selected applicants will be contacted prior to April 1, 2012. If other summer opportunities become available after April 8, 2012, additional applications may be reconsidered.

All offers for Student Research Intern positions will be contingent upon the
satisfactory results of a Clinical Background Investigation and Drug Screen.

Placement:  Each applicant's internship will be based on their research interests selected on the application form. Each experience will be different based on the research question, mentor and status of the project. Possible work environments include a basic science laboratory at the Van Andel Research Institute (VARI), a private physician’s office, a community setting or a research lab at Cook DeVos Center for Health Sciences.

Salary:  The Summer Student Internship Program will be limited to 10 hours per week (3 positions available) for 8 weeks; or 20 hours per week (1 position available) for 8 weeks.  The pay will be $12/hr.

Housing:  It will be the responsibility of the student to make travel and housing arrangements and to pay for his or her own room and board.

Eligibility:  GVSU students must be currently enrolled in a health professions or related graduate program, and in good academic standing.

Application Process:  All application materials are due by Friday, February 24, 2012.
