Students develop their skills using low fidelity task trainers like IV arms and urinary catheter models.
Medium-fidelity manikins have electronic heart, lung, and bowel sounds, which familiarize students with the experience of working on a patient.
High-fidelity manikins are computerized models that respond to drugs, breathe in oxygen, breathe out carbon dioxide, and have veins and fluids. These models can be programmed to simulate infinite types of conditions and situations, and will die if not cared for properly. Therefore, students are able to experience some of the urgency of caring for a real patient.
Trained personnel portray a variety of health conditions in the model health suite, and students must decide how to diagnose and treat them. Along with providing more procedural practice, this interaction helps students hone their communication and relational skills.
