Chicago-based artist, writer and filmmaker Robin Deacon Visits GVSU

For one of its final lectures in this year's extensive Guest Speaker program, the Department of Art and Design and the Visual Studies Program are pleased to host the accomplished artist, writer and filmmaker Robin Deacon on Thursday, April 20th, from 4:45-6 p.m., in room 114, Lake Michigan Hall. Deacon's lecture will be free and open to the public.
Robin Deacon is an Eastbourne, England-born artist, writer, filmmaker, and educator. His work has explored questions of memory, absence and fiction in performance practice, through a constant reconfiguration of his role as an artist — as a journalist and biographer, operator and technician, imposter and stooge. His recent research projects have explored histories of video documentation and outmoded media formats, as well as the practice and ethics of performance reenactment. His live and screen based work has been extensively presented in Europe, the US, and Asia. He is Associate Professor and Chair of Performance at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Deacon's lecture will last approximately 45 minutes, allowing time for attendees to ask questions. Not only he will present his work, but Robin will also be involved in a series of studio visits with students and a smaller talk in the afternoon at room 1718.
Robin Deacon's visit reinforces the Department's commitment to an inclusive education through its visiting speakers program. This past year, 15 nationally and internationally known artists, designers and critics visited the campus for lectures, studio visits, practicum workshops and other activities. This diversity allows students to learn from professionals practicing in a variety of media.
