Creating Effective Resumes for Non-military Employers

Date: October 29, 2013

Many veterans struggle to convert military skills and experiences into language that is readily understood by civilian employers. The skills that you have gained in the military are truly valuable and in high demand; yet communicating those skills can be challenging. For instance, MOS codes, titles, and military roles that have meaning to those in the military do not convey competencies, expertise, and experience to many employers and civilian Human Resource managers.

To assist GVSU’s current and former Servicemembers with producing a highly effective resume, which will be readily understood by employers, the Veterans Network and Career Center are hosting an on-campus consultant to assist with resume development.

Grand Valley State University has partnered with Compass Point, to offer the following:

  • Specialized knowledge with developing resumes that effectively convert military backgrounds to civilian applications
  • One-on-One consultations
  • Packaging of veteran tax credits for employers into personal resume/background information (provides extra incentive for organizations to hire veterans)
  • Active links to organizations that seek to hire veterans

This is a great opportunity for you to advance your career and is provided as a FREE service to Grand Valley Student Veterans. We only ask that you schedule an appointment, in advance.  This new program will launch on Wednesday, 06 November 2013, in GVSU’s Richard M. DeVos Center room 101B, located at 401 West Fulton, Grand Rapids.

To schedule an appointment and jump start an effective search, please email lipnicks@gvsu.eduor call 616.331.7188.  Please bring a printed copy of your current resume and access to a digital copy.
