Community Involvement

Community involvement and volunteer hours reflect favorably on a college application for several reasons.  It shows that you possess certain desirable values, such as a sense of social responsibility and a commitment to community.
The students in our program are required to reach out to their community by volunteering several hours each month. They also participate in group community service projects organized by the program.

Examples of service projects are:
  • WGVU's Pledge Drive (answering the phone and taking pledges)
  • Zoo goes Boo at John Ball Park Zoo
  • Old Kent River Run
  • Walk to Cure Diabetes
  • Reading is Fundamental
  • Kentwood Trailfest
  • West Michigan Grand Prix
  • Adopt-a-Family
  • Mel Trotter Missions
  • Hispanic Center holiday food baskets

In addition to local community projects, our summer trips also involve volunteerism. The students have cleaned up wetlands in Seattle, WA; served in soup kitchens in San Francisco, CA; and worked in senior citizen buildings in Baltimore, MD.
