International Trumpet Seminar 2012

July 21-28 2012

Featuring guest artists from around the world, the Grand Valley State University International Trumpet Seminar is looking forward to its seventh year!

Students attending the seminar will begin each day warming up with one of our clinicians. They will have the opportunity to participate in our trumpet ensembles, mass trumpet ensembles, and our solo competition. On a daily basis, students attend masterclasses from our guest and faculty, as well as attend group lessons. Each evening closes with a wonderful faculty recital.

This year we will also be offering further specialization during the group lesson times, focusing on the different areas of trumpet playing. These include:

  • Practicing jazz and improv with Rex Richardson. One or two students will be picked to solo with Rex on the big band concert.
  • Orchestra repertoire with Bill Lucas and Karl Sievers. There will be two levels of study: an intro to the orchestra, teaching beginning repertoire; and a class for advanced players. Both classes will have an informal mock orchestra competition.
  • Solo literature with Jean Libs, Richard Stoelzel, and Dan Patrylak. Solo class will focus on modern and newly composed music and will offer students a chance to work with some composers directly.
  • Composition class with Britton Theurer, Jim Stephenson, and Erik Morales.  These leading trumpet composers will teach you the ins and outs of writing for trumpet ensemble or trumpet and piano.

The program is an intensive eight day seminar culminating in a final concert showcasing the pieces the students have worked on all week. There will be a solo competition at the end of the seminar to determine which students get to play solos on the final concert. Along with the opportunity to solo on the final concert, there will also be other prizes which will be announced shortly.
