Professional Readiness Examination (PRE)

GVSU candidates for Michigan teacher certification must take and pass the PRE (Professional Readiness Examination: test number 096) prior to being admitted to the College of Education for teacher assisting. The PRE consists of three sub-tests: Mathematics, Reading, and Writing. More information about the PRE test, including study aids and practice tests, can be found on the CLAS Academic Advising Center's PRE information page.

PRE Test Registration:
Visit the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) website to learn details about PRE test dates and to register. The last administration of the PRE is scheduled for September 23, 2017. After that date, the SAT will replace the PRE. Please note that passing scores from the PRE, or its predecessor the Basic Skills Test (BST), will continue to be accepted by the state.

SAT Test

The Michigan Department of Education released a statement on April 10, 2017 that the Professional Readiness Exam (PRE Test) will be replaced with the SAT test. Anyone with passing scores from the newly-redesigned SAT (as administered on March 5, 2016 or later) now fulfills the requirements set forth by Michigan Compiled Law (MCL) 380.1531(2).

In order to meet the requirement for teacher certification, the SAT has two sections that must be passed at or above the career- and college-readiness (CCR) benchmark as shown below:

  • Evidence-Based Reading and Writing = Score 480 or higher
  • Mathematics =  Score 530 or higher

Both individual sections of the SAT must be passed at or above these score values; there is no CCR benchmark made on the SAT Composite, or overall, score scale.
