2016 Measure for Measure

Measure for Measure

Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Roger Ellis

Shakespeare’s darkest comedy tackles the twin evils of power and corruption with outrageous humor, giving hope to the hopeless and courage to the powerless. His city caught in a moral free-fall, the Duke of Vienna hands over power to Lord Angelo, who enforces long-dormant codes of chastity with zealous fervor. When Isabella, a pious young nun, pleads for the life of her condemned brother, Angelo's response is surprisingly sensual — revealing a web of desire, deception, and hypocrisy that infects every
corner of society.

Laker Effect

Stratford Trip 2014

Twenty-two Theatre students accompanied by Jim Bell and Karen Libman attended the production of The Beaux’ Stratagem at the Stratford Festival. Last fall, professor Bell is taught a class on Restoration Comedy Dramaturgy that coincides with the production of Restoration Comedy in April. Restoration Comedy is an adaptation of two Restoration period comedies-Loves Last Shift and The Relapse . The Dramaturgy class is an intensive study of the nature of Restoration period comedies including reading numerous examples. But in theatre seeing is always believing. As such, the opportunity to see a Restoration comedy performed by a professional company was too good to pass up. Half of the students who attended were from Bell’s Dramaturgy class and read the play in preparation. The production was outstanding and very much enjoyed by all. The Grand Valley Theatre students were an exemplary and enthusiastic audience. The stars aligned in that the production closed on October 11 with a Saturday matinee. This allowed the group to see the production after the close of the Shakespeare Festival that would have conflicted for many of the students, and allowed the group to travel to see the production and return in one day, saving on costs.
