Up Next: Stephen Sondheim's COMPANY

GVSU Opera Theatre presents

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

Stage Direction by Karen Babcock

Artistic Direction by Dale Schriemer

January 30 – February 8, 2015

Tickets are on sale now! Adults - $14, Seniors/GVSU faculty & staff - $12, all students - $6.

Stephen Sondheim’s production broke new ground in several ways when it premiered back in 1970—it tackled adult subject matter rarely seen in the world of Broadway musicals, and it forwent a linear narrative in favor of vignettes that revolved around a single character. This unconventional approach paid off: the musical went on to win six Tony Awards and helped cement several songs in the Broadway canon, including “Getting Married Today,” “Being Alive,” and “The Ladies Who Lunch.”

GVSU Theatre Trip 2014

Twenty two Theatre students accompanied by Jim Bell and Karen Libman attended the production of The Beaux’ Stratagem at the Stratford Festival. This fall, professor Bell is teaching a class on Restoration Comedy Dramaturgy that coincides with the upcoming production of Restoration Comedy in April. Restoration Comedy is an adaptation of two Restoration period comedies-Loves Last Shift and The Relapse . The Dramaturgy class is an intensive study of the nature of Restoration period comedies including reading numerous examples. But in theatre seeing is always believing. As such, the opportunity to see a Restoration comedy performed by a professional company was too good to pass up. Half of the students who attended were from Bell’s Dramaturgy class and read the play in preparation. The production was outstanding and very much enjoyed by all. The Grand Valley Theatre students were an exemplary and enthusiastic audience. The stars aligned in that the production closed on October 11 with a Saturday matinee. This allowed the group to see the production after the close of the Shakespeare Festival that would have conflicted for many of the students, and allowed the group to travel to see the production and return in one day, saving on costs.

Reasons To Be Pretty

Performance Studio Series:

GVSU Theatre students hone their skills in all aspects of theatre in these fully staged, student directed and acted productions in an intimate setting on stage in the Louis Armstrong Theatre.

Reasons To Be Pretty, written by Neil LaBute and directed by Theatre student, Cody Robison

February 13 - 15, 2015

Friday, February 13 @ 7:30pm

Saturday, February 14 @ 2:00pm & 7:30pm

Sunday, February 15 @ 2:00pm

All tickets are general admission, $6.00, and $7.00 on the day of the performance.

Reasons to be Pretty focuses on the human tendency to be all to consumed by physical appearance. The events that follow in the play begin from a subtle remark of being "regular" and in a downward spiral of events comedic and serious, the couples' relationships find themselves at the breaking point. LaBute creates a very relate-able story within this work, and shows just how shallow people can be without even realizing it.
