How do I get admitted to the W. K. Kellogg Foundation’s Woodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellowship Program?

Application for the third year of the Fellowship are closed.

How do indicate that I want to attend GVSU?

On your application you will be able to identify which of the six Michigan universities you wish to attend: Eastern Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Western Michigan University, or Wayne State University.

Since GVSU will not know if you apply and are interested in attending the GVSU program, we ask that you inform us by contacting us to set up an appointment to go things that you can do between the time you apply and the time you are admitted. NOTE: There is not way that GVSU  will know the status of your application until it is sent to us.

When do I need to apply?

For the 2013 cohort of Fellows, the application process begins summer 2012.  All applications must be completed by January, 2013.

How many Fellows will be selected to attend GVSU?

Applications of fifteen Fellows will be selected by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation and sent to GVSU for review before they are admitted to the program at GVSU. Each of the other Michigan universities will have 15 applicants selected for each of their programs as well.

Do I have to fill out an admissions application for GVSU too?

No. The application process coordinated by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation will include admission to GVSU for Fellows selected for the GVSU cohort.

Will I have to complete other enrollment requirements before coming to GVSU?

Yes. We encourage all Fellows to register for and take the MTTC Basic Skills Test prior to coming to campus. We also encourage you to go over your teachable major and MTTC test objectives then sign up for the MTTC subject area test. In addition,  we encourage you to start your 25 hours of volunteer work with adolescents in diverse settings as a way to become more familiar with how young people learn. You are encouraged to complete the required background check before the program begins or during the first week of the program. You also will want to set up an appointment with your doctor for your TB test.  By completing these requirements before coming to campus, you will be able to begin your field work soon after you arrive on campus.

How is the GVSU certification and master’s degree program organized?

The design of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation’s Woodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellowship Program at GVSU is very intensive. Fellows will be actively involved in program activities all day every day throughout the program. Each course includes both field based and academic based components. Please see the draft program schedule and draft summer program calendar pages for more information on the scheudule coursework that will comprise the program.

After completing certification, Fellows will complete their M.Ed. degrees the following summer. All GVSU Fellows will be mentored by GVSU for their first 3 years of teaching.
