Visual Impact: Use Free Software to Create Video Lessons
Date: June 20 & 21, 2012
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Location: GVSU's Meijer Campus, Holland
Presented By: Matt Langlois, LMSW
Training Summary:

Participants will learn to use a variety of free online and downloaded computer programs to create social skills lessons for use in 1:1 sessions, small groups, or whole classrooms.
Topics will include:
* Hardware needed (cameras, video cameras, computers, projectors, DVDs, etc): how to use what you have
* Software to use: where to get it for free, what is worth the money based on the level of complexity required, and what websites to use. Learn to capture screen images and video with Jing!, make “Ken Burns-style” documentary movies with Microsoft Photostory 3, create or edit photos with GIMP graphics creator, or use Make BeliefsComix to create your own easily customized comic strips that relate to your content area or to social skills lessons.
* How to use free online software called “Prezi” to visually organize ideas-- great for teachers to prepare their own ideas and for students to use in a variety of academic settings. (this is similar to Power Point, but way more advanced and less linear).
* This training will use project-based learning techniques, so plan to “learn by doing”  throughout the course.  You will create finished products, and you will be able to teach your students to make highly engaging visual content to increase their learning and engagement in school.

Cost: $159 (includes training materials, morning refreshments and 13.0 approved social work continuing education clock hours)

Training Summary:

The numbers of students living without vital resources has grown significantly in the past several years.  Poverty is the most identifiable outcome of lack of resources, but there are eight other resources that make a significant impact on student success.  Discussion, experience, active participation, and investigations will be the foundations of the two day class designed to provide teachers with a better understanding of the impact from the lack of resources and which interventions may prove to be the most effective.  Direct connection to common initiatives of Response to Intervention, Explicit Instruction, Differentiation, and Capturing Kids’ Hearts will help participants connect the information to pieces already in place in their professional lives.
