Date and Time

Monday, March 20, 2017 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Description

You may be thinking, "what's a rocket stove?" Rocket stoves are heating and cooking stoves constructed from bricks in a way that allows maximum energy to be captured from burning wood. The new rocket stove coming to the SAP will be used to create meals from fresh produce grown on the SAP farm! It may also be used in the future to create maple syrup from local maple trees.

Interested in learning more? Join us for this fun, hands-on, informative workshop! The workshop has been LIB 100 approved.

The workshop:
This unique and practical workshop will focus on creating useful heat efficiently from local materials. Special guest Deanne Bednar of The Strawbale Studio in Oxford, MI will lead the workshop, teaching students about rocket stoves and providing guidance through the construction of a rocket stove on GVSU's Sustainable Agriculture Project (SAP) Luce St. farm site (located 1 mile South of campus).

What you will learn:
Upon completion of the event, participants will gain heightened awareness of the impacts their energy choices make across an array of contexts: farmers, their community, their family, themselves, developing nations, and/or the environment. Rocket stoves have been used as a heat and cooking source by many cultures pre-dating historical documentation; as such, this workshop is a chance to explore traditional human culture and technologies.Participants will also gain appreciation for and awareness of producing sustainable, efficient heat energy.

This event is co-sponsored by the GVSU Office of Sustainability Practices, Environmental Studies, Biology and Natural Resource Management, and Anthropology.
