The two teams competed in the National Robotics Competition in Marion, Ohio from April 14-16. A team comprised of students Brian Collins of Warrenville, Ill., Nathan Seitz of Standale and Ryan Schwark of Lenox took top honors. The team of Shawn Wright of Sparta, Alexander Gabier of Jenison and Tyler Dekiep of Spring Lake took second place.
They took part in the Mini-Sumo Robot Competition. The individual matches consisted of two autonomous robots placed into a circular ring with the goal of pushing the other robot out of the ring. The robots were required to sense the opponent's robot and the edge of the ring. The students designed and built the chassis, wrote a program to control the robot's motors and to receive data from the on-board sensors. The data was used to locate the opponent and determine the best attack.
