With more than 39,000 students, Babes-Bolyai University (BBU) is a large, public University with students from all over the world. It was originally established in 1581 making it one of the oldest Universities in Romania. Babes-Bolyai University is located in the city of Cluj-Napoca, the second most populous city in Romania. Cluj-Napoca is in the heart of the Transylvania which is most often recognized because of author Bram Stoker's fictitious character Dracula. The city offers a great deal to students who choose to venture to this less-traditional study abroad location. It hosts very well-known film and music festivals, many restaurants, clubs and beautiful parks. It prides itself on offering a great blend of strong traditions and modernity.
The regular cost of a semester at BBU is less than a semester at GVSU due to the low cost of living in Romania. GVSU students can apply for the Erasmus+ Scholarship that will include a stipend of 750 Euro per month and airfare which could bring the total estimated cost of this semester exchange to around $5,500 for 4.5 months. Without the scholarship, this program still costs less than a semester at GVSU! BBU offers a very welcoming and open campus and embraces multiculturalism as a core value of the institution.

Where will I live?
Students are able to apply for on-campus housing and off-campus apartments. Students that wish to live on-campus should apply for housing early to ensure placement on-campus.

2.5 (undergraduate) or 3.0 (graduate) GPA required.

Students typically pay for study abroad through a combination of financial aid, personal funds, scholarships/grants and alternative loans. Early application for financial aid is strongly recommended.

Erasmus Plus Program:
Erasmus+ is a program sponsored by the European Commission that offers scholarship support to students studying at a partner institution for one semester. Scholarships are competitive. The number of scholarships available may vary from year to year. BBU conducts a selection process to identify the strongest candidates who will be offered a scholarship. The number of available scholarships will vary based on the total number of applicants any given semester. Minimum of a 2.5 GPA is required, but a competitive applicant should have a 3.0 or above. Students must agree to attend one of the PIC required pre-departure orientation. Students must be majoring or minoring in one of the following subjects: Journalism, Political Science, Business, Master of Business Administration (MBA). Study Abroad Semester Grant:
Students who complete an online study abroad application by the designated priority deadline, have a 2.5 GPA and a FAFSA on file, may be eligible for a study abroad grant ranging from $500-$1,750/semester. Due to limited funding, not all eligible students will receive a grant.
