Middle Eastern Studies

Morocco

What better way to learn, participate, and explore the Middle East than to study abroad in Turkey, Oman, Morocco, or Jordan. Study Abroad provides opportunities for rich cultural enrichment, development of intercultural skills, and a deeper understanding of the heritage, problems, and perspectives of Middle Eastern cultures. All of this, while receiving course credits, traveling abroad, and discovering something great and new.

Students interested in combining their study abroad experience with an internship, or just looking to do an internship have some options as well. Customized internships are available through GVSU Internships and other programs such as ISA and World Endeavors.

Keep in Mind

  • Once you have selected a program, be sure to meet with your adviser at least three months prior to departing for your program.
  • Be sure to explore both GVSU and external options by browsing the Program Suggestions below. Students are not limited to GVSU study abroad programs.
  • There are several opportunities to intern and or volunteer while abroad.
  • Students are also able to fulfill General Education requirements abroad, including their General Education Issues requirement.

Academic Advice

  • Students should meet with their MES adviser at least three months prior to departing for their program.
  • The Middle East Studies director must approve any MES courses students wish to take to ensure that they will be counted toward their degree requirements.
  • The B.A. requires third semester proficiency in a foreign language. Consider working on this requirement while studying abroad.
  • A great advantage of studying abroad is living in the region you are studying. Learning about the history, language, and literature of your home-away-from-home enhances your experiences outside the classroom. Your daily interaction with the local culture also brings the subjects you are learning to life.
  • Students may fulfill General Education Foundation and Issues requirements abroad

To determine the GVSU course equivalencies for courses taken abroad, please visit our Course Approval page.

Once you have selected a program, schedule a meeting with your academic advisor to discuss your plans.
