International Mentoring Program
Program Description The focus of the student led mentorship program is to create partnerships between one domestic GVSU student and three international students. The group will provide a support network for incoming international students as they become acclimated to the local community. In addition to being a resource for mentees, the mentor will introduce international students to GVSU events, as well as, local culture and attractions by planning three group activities during the semester.
Mentor Position Description Mentors should have a genuine commitment to be a support network, resource, and cultural guide for incoming international students. Mentors will help international students become acclimated to the GVSU community and local area by maintaining contact with mentees and attending and organizing group events throughout the semester.
Specific Position Responsibilities: • Attend the opening orientation event planned by Padnos International Center Wednesday, August 26th • Each mentor is responsible to organize and implement three group events during the semester. Event focuses include: one sporting event (can be GVSU or a local team), one cultural event (theatre, museum, etc.), and one social event (bowling, laser tag, etc.). Groups may choose to do more activities as they see fit throughout the semester. All events must be approved through the Padnos International Center.
Position Requirements: Each prospective mentor will complete an application and submit a recommendation letter. Requirements on the application will include: • Sophomore standing • 3.0 GPA • Full time standing Participation Benefits • Cross-cultural growth • Increase skills in communication, leadership, and time management • Contribute to the GVSU community by providing a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for incoming international students • Meet new people • Satisfaction of meeting and helping international students become acclimated to GVSU and the local community • Promote international student involvement in the U.S. experience • Gain valuable volunteer experience and reference upon successful completion Application/Paring Process New Mentors: • Complete the GVSU INTERNATIONAL MENTORING PROGRAM APPLICATION • Deadline to submit application is Monday, August 10th • Your application will be reviewed and you will be contacted • If accepted to the program, you will receive mentor logistic information and your mentee pairings by Friday, August 14th Returning Mentors: • Complete the GVSU INTERNATIONAL MENTORING PROGRAM APPLICATION • Deadline to submit application is Monday, August 10th • Returning applicants will automatically be accepted back into the mentoring program as long as they complete and submit the application by the deadline • You will receive mentor logistic information and your mentee pairings by Friday, August 14th Please contact Liz Smith, Padnos International Center at 616-331-3898 or intlstdt@gvsu.edu for additional information regarding the
