Embassies and Consulates

What is the difference between an embassy and a consulate?

While consulates and embassies perform the same administrative tasks such as the ones of issuing visas and issuing and renewing passports, to name a few, embassies also have the duty of representing their governments abroad.
Embassy personnel and consular offices abroad can be very useful while traveling. It is recommended that you check in with the nearest embassy if you plan to be in any particular country for more than 10 days. It is wise to provide information regarding your visit to the country, local contacts, length of stay, etc. For information on U.S. Embassies and Consulates worldwide and the services provided at each site, visit: http://usembassy.state.gov
