University Policies

Disciplinary Issues
Students studying overseas are still GVSU students and remain subject to the rules and policies governing all GVSU students, just as though they were studying on-campus. This includes policies relating to academic honesty, harassment, plagiarism, to name only a few.  For details, please review the GVSU Student Code of Conduct.

Students are subject to the laws of their host country. These laws may be very different from U.S. laws and punishments may be more severe. GVSU and the U.S. State Department are unable to assist students who have broken the law while in another country.

Students would do well to discard the illusion that their time abroad is an escape from reality, and that their actions carry no consequences; they should resist the temptation to act out inhibitions they would never dream of indulging in the U.S.

Risk and Release
Students are required to sign a Risk and Release statement prior to participating in study abroad. This statement is made available through your OASIS account. It is important for you to carefully read this document and ask questions if you have them. Please note that your e-consent is legally binding.

Independent Travel

Students are encouraged to pursue independent travel opportunities while abroad in order to experience a variety of cultures. While this is encouraged, remember that your primary purpose for being overseas is to participate in the academic program. Independent travel should be pursued on weekends, during your breaks, or once the academic program has ended. GVSU also strongly recommends that students travel in groups of 2 or more for safety.

Students are reminded to travel responsibly. It is important to notify your program or other involved parties of your travel plans. This is just a good practice and helps to eliminate confusion and concern amongst all parties.

If you are living in a homestay, be sure to leave travel information with your family. If you are living in residence halls, let your neighbors, or someone you trust, know when you plan to return. If your return plans change, be sure to notify your contact back at your host university. If you fail to return at your scheduled time, leave instructions for your contact on who to call.

GVSU is involved in cases each year where a student fails to return from an independent trip at a scheduled time. In nearly all cases, the student forgot to notify someone back at the host institution or just decided not to. If GVSU is contacted regarding your missing status, we will begin the planning for making a formal report to the U.S. Embassy. We will first exhaust every effort to track you down and will then proceed with making a formal report. There is a lot involved with filing this information. It is most helpful if you make a commitment to maintaining good communication during your time abroad.

Reminder:  Please be sure to register your trips with the U.S. Embassy. This is a simple process and can be done via the Internet. To register a trip
