About Pädagogische Hochschule Schwäbisch Gmünd (PHSG)

Founded as a teacher training college, PHSG offers outstanding educational programs to more than 2,300 students. Students can take courses in English or in German. Most students will take courses offered by the English Department or German language courses. There are limited courses offered in English. Students are strongly encouraged to apply for the spring/summer semester since there are more English courses offered at that time. Many PHSG faculty have experience working with international students who are still working on developing a proficiency in German.

Location

Set upon a hilltop just outside the town of Schwabisch Gmund, PHSG is just a short bus ride to the city centre which offers students a very warm and culturally rich atmosphere. This medieval town has several architectural treasures, museums, shopping centers and cafes. Schwäbisch Gmünd is just 40 minutes by train to the city of Stuttgart where students can enjoy the many amenities of a larger German city such as: museums, historical monuments, parks, cathedrals, theatres, restaurants and shopping centers.

Housing

Students will be supplied university housing with a single room and a shared bath for approximately €200 per month. A shared living area (kitchen, lounge, TV) is available on each floor. The building houses 278 students and is a short walk (10-15 minutes) from campus. Students can rent bedding for €15 per semester, as well as purchase basic cutlery and dishes for €10, from the International Office.

Academic Program & Courses

  • Spring/Summer: Mid-April to end of July (recommended)*
  • Fall October: End of January

*PHSG begins the spring program the 2nd week of April. Students will need to make arrangements to complete all winter semester course requirements prior to departure in mid-April. In some cases, students may need to arrive to PHSG late in order to finish out their current semester at GVSU. GVSU’s semester does not end until the end of April.
