Outcome M Respect for Others through Diverse Recreational Opportunities

Students will formulate a respect for others through diverse recreational experiences and interactions with those different from themselves.
Objective 1 Campus Recreation will improve representation of students from underrepresented minority (URM*) groups within recreation programs. *URM includes students who are classified in the following groups according to federal reporting standard for race & ethnicity: Hispanic/Latino, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native.

Recreation Opportunities that are at no additional cost for the student met our diversity goal to meet or exceed the diversity demographics of the university. For overall recreation participation, 17.4% of our participants are students of color.

The percentage of of underrepresented minority students in print material has increased from 13% to 22.5%. However, both Instagram and Twitter have decreased Instagram from 21% to 10.8% and Twitter from 12% to 10.8%.

The Intentional Marketing Assessment conducted in Nov and Dec 2016 assessed 412 faces within our social media and marketing platforms. Among these, 8% were people of color, 92% were non-people of color, 44% were female identified and 55% were perceived as male.

Outcome N Sense of Belonging through Recreation

Students will enhance their sense of belonging/association through participation in recreation.
Objective 2 Campus Recreation will contribute to an Increased Sense of Belonging for GVSU Students

Students have indicated that Campus Recreation matters in their sense of belonging at GVSU. 76% of Student Respondents indicated that Recreation has increased or improved their Sense of Belonging/Association.

75% of club sport athletes that responded stated that by participating in GVSU Club Sports positively impacted their connection to the GVSU community.

With a response rate of roughly 37%, 91% of respondents indicate that club sports has positively impacted their connection to the GVSU campus community.

Objective 3 Campus Recreation will increase FY retention rates for students who participate in recreation.

Retention rates for first year FTIAC for students that participate in Recreation and Wellness programs continue to have higher retention rates than non-recreation participants. In Fall 2020 84.8% of FTIAC Recreation participants were retained, compared to 72.9% of FTIAC non-Recreation participants. All program areas had a fall 19-fall 20 FITAC retention of 83% or higher. Some areas had over 90% retention including special events, fitness and wellness and group exercise. Some program areas have decreased their FTIAC retention from '19 to '20: OA -5.2%, student staff -9.6%, IM's -0.7%, Club sports -3.6%, Fitness & Wellness -0.9%, Rec Scan in's -2%, and group exercise was the same, which all will be shared for further review.

First year retention of FTIAC students who participate in Recreation programs have a higher retention rate than non-Recreation participants, and in some areas are significantly higher (program areas reporting over 90% retention include: Rec Student Employees, Fitness & Wellness Services, Group Exercise, Club Sports and Outdoor Adventures) compared to non-Recreation participant retention rate of 71.2%.

Outcome O Culture of inclusion

Campus Recreation student employees will be committed and welcoming to a culture of inclusion.
Objective 4 Increase Campus Recreation student employees’ knowledge and understanding of diversity and inclusion, resulting in 50% or more students indicating a higher level of understanding of diversity and inclusive issues at the end of the training

We conducted an all staff training in August 2019 and invited University Counseling Center in to train students on QPR. The number of surveys is unknown, but the training was mandatory for Recreation & Wellness Staff it also included Athletic and Rec Facilities. Total number of students was at least 80. 100 percent of respondents reported increased confidence in knowledge and understanding in the post assessment. In January 2020, we conducted an all staff training and invited Disability Support Resources to provide education and awareness on students with disabilities at GVSU. Approximately 80 students were in attendance. 58 pre and post assessments were collected and 100 percent of students reported increased knowledge, awareness and understanding of disabilities in their post assessment.
