John Bancheri

John Michael Bancheri, M.A.

Coach Bancheri is a passionate leader who began his rowing career in 1973 at the Atlantic City High School and Viking Rowing Club. He serves as a mentor for aspiring coaches and in 2002 was selected as the Dad Vail Coach of the Year. Coach Bancheri holds a bachelor's degree in History and Area Studies from the University of Charleston in 1983 and a master's degree in History from Marietta College in 2004. Coach Bancheri has built successful programs at Wichita State, the University of Charleston, and Marietta College. In 2005, Coach Bancheri was invited to be the Senior Heavyweight Men's Head Coach at the Penn A.C. Rowing Club in Philadelphia. His crews have won five gold medals in the Men's Frosh 8+, two gold medals and a Silver Medal in the Men's JV 8+ and four bronzes in the Men's Varsity 8+ at the Dad Vail. At the first ACRA National Championship in 2008, he led the men to a bronze medal in the Men's Varsity 8+ and a gold medal in the Men's Varsity Lightweight 4+. He led the entire team at Grand Valley to a second place finish at the Dad Vail and the teams point championship at ACRA. In 2009, the Women's Varsity Eight won the Head of the Charles and the Men's Varsity Eight placed third. At the 2010 San Diego Crew Classic, the Men's Varsity Eight were the Cal Cup runners up and the Women's Varsity Eight made it to the Grand Final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup. At the 2012 San Diego Crew Classic, the Men's Varsity Eight Were Men Health Cal Cup Champions. This past year, for the fifth season in a row, GVSU won the ACRA Team Points National Championship. Coach Bancheri is US Rowing level III certified and Power Boating certified. Coach Bancheri lives in Allendale and has twin sons, John Patrick and Salvatore Vincenzo.

OUR MISSION: Grand Valley Rowing challenges its student-athletes to reach the highest level to which they aspire both academically and athletically, while continuing to build and sustain a nationally competitive intercollegiate rowing program.

Eric Garvelink

Club Sports Coordinator

Eric Garvelink has been named the Club Sports Coordinator after serving as Graduate Assistant for the Office of Student Life. Eric received his bachelor's degree from GVSU, where he majored in sport leadership and enrolled in the CSAL graduate program. During his undergrad, Eric participated as a student-assistant on the men's basketball team at GVSU for two years. He was also an active member of the student fan club for Grand Valley athletics, LAKER NATION. In addition to these activities, Eric also participated in and officiated with the intramural program.

Eric brings to the Office of Student Life a diverse background in athletics. Coaching, officiating, and administrative duties have molded Eric's background in sport management. He has been active and working in different levels of athletics ranging from college to township and high school. For six months, as part of an internship, Eric took on the role of Assistant Athletic Director at Rogers High School in Wyoming, MI. During the summer of 2011, Eric traveled to Los Angeles, CA to take part in an internship at UCLA working with the Club Sports program and helping with special events on campus.

Santiago Gayton

Fraternity and Sorority Life Coordinator

Santiago currently serves as the Fraternity and Sorority Life Coordinator. Santiago received his B.A. in Political Science from Grand Valley State University in 2006 and his M.A. in Educational Administration and Leadership with Student Affairs Emphasis from the University of the Pacific in 2009. Prior to joining Grand Valley, Santiago worked at Texas A&M University as the Leadership Development Specialist for the Office of Greek Life where he served as the advisor to the Interfraternity Council and the Order of Omega and to develop leadership programs for the fraternity and sorority community. Santiago is a proud member of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. and a Chartering Brother of the Alpha Gamma Chapter at GVSU.


Valerie Guzman

Assistant Director of Student Life, Leadership and Service Initiatives

Valerie Jones joined the GVSU Office of Student Life staff in August 2008 as one of several Assistant Directors. She directly oversees the Laker Leadership Programs and the Community Service Learning Center staff, programs, and resources. Additionally, Valerie serves as a resource for all Service & Advocacy groups on campus and is the direct advisor of several service organizations at GVSU, including Alternative Breaks and Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honorary. Prior to arriving at GVSU, Valerie spent several years working at the University of Miami (Coral Gables, FL) in the service and leadership office. Valerie earned her undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University and M.Ed in College Student Affairs Leadership at GVSU. She is originally from west Michigan and resides in northwest Grand Rapids. Outside of work Valerie is a dance instructor at a local dance studio, enjoys cooking, and is working toward her EdD.



Krista McFarland

Student Life Assistant

Krista received her Bachelors degree in Psychology from Grand Valley State University in 1995 and was very involved with student life during that time. She has worked at GVSU for over seventeen years, including WGVU, the Johnson Center for Philanthropy, and General Education before joining the Student Life staff in 2012. She is the Student Life Assistant and provides support to the daily operations for the Office of Student Life, including working closely with student organizations on their events, scheduling, and handling financial and budget related matters.

Frederick Mooney

Assistant Director of Event Services

Frederick Mooney has been in the role of Assistant Director for Event Services since 2001. Events Services is comprised of Kirkhof Center and Cook DeWitt Center Operations, Reservations, and Media Services for non-academic events on campus. Prior to serving at Grand Valley, Frederick was the Associate Director of Kellogg Center Operations/Campus Audio-Visual Coordinator (2000 - 2001) and Assistant Director of Operations at Albion College (1996 - 2000). He has a M.Ed in College Student Affairs Leadership from Grand Valley and a B.S. in Administrative Management from Eastern Michigan University. Frederick enjoys connecting with students by encouraging them to think critically in situations aiding their development personally and professionally.

LeaAnn Tibbe

Assistant Director of Student Life

LeaAnn Tibbe works with the marketing and promotions of events happening in Student Life. She supervises the Promotions Office along with the 2020 Information Desk. Her responsibilities also include coordinating several large scale traditional campus events such as: Convocation, Family Weekend, Commencement and the Presidents Ball. LeaAnn has been with GVSU since 1994, prior to that she worked in the Meijer corporate office. She has a B.A. in English and a M.Ed. both from GVSU.

Bob Stoll

Associate Dean for Student Life

Bob Stoll has served the students of Grand Valley State University since 1983. During his time at Grand Valley, he has impacted the lives of students starting with their first experience at orientation all the way through commencement. Bob sees his role as one who helps create an exciting educational environment that encourages student engagement in the campus community. It is through this engagement in various programs and student organizations that students will further their education and learn more about themselves and their future role in society.

Bob has been influential in developing many campus programs and traditions. He has assisted in the planning of a number of building projects on campus. His vision has helped Grand Valley become the place it is today. In addition to his various roles and responsibilities as the Associate Dean of Student Life, Bob coordinates the university commencement ceremonies held at Van Andel Arena, along with the annual fall Convocation ceremony. Bob has been recognized for his work at Grand Valley including the Administrative Professional Achievement Award and the National Associations of Campus Activities Hall of Fame Award.

Bob earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Northern Michigan University.

Alaina Woloszyn

Alaina Woloszyn

Student Life Promotions Office Coordinator

Alaina has been the Student Life Promotions Office Coordinator since 2010. Her responsibilities include working with her staff to develop promotional pieces for Student Life, student organizations, Grand Valley State departments and the broader campus. She graduated from GVSU with a degree in Art and Design with an emphasis of Graphic Design. She also worked at the Promotions Office as a student as well as an official with the Intramural Program. She is currently working on her Masters of Communication at GVSU.
