This January 26, learn about Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and give back to your community. MLK Jr. Day of Service and Solidarity is your chance to learn about the injustices that still exist in society today and participate in one of the many service projects happening throughout West Michigan.

This day is an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the impact he made on our country. Despite the immense progress that has been made by King and many others, it cannot be denied that injustice still exists in our world and there are countless problems that still need to be addressed. This January 26, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr, take time to participate in acts of service, work with your community, and learn more about the largest problems facing our world and how you can make a change.

The Day of Service will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Cook-Dewitt with an inspiring keynote presentation. Though online registration for the event has closed, walk-ins are welcome and students are encouraged to show up with the willingness to work and the readiness to learn. You will then be sent to various nonprofits throughout West Michigan for the day, and you will have the opportunity to volunteer in homeless shelters, help with home construction projects, assist in thrift stores, and more. All transportation and lunch is provided, but most importantly, you will be able to work alongside community members to better West Michigan and broaden your perspectives on our world.

You will get to experience the pure fulfillment that only comes from helping others and strengthen relationships with your fellow Lakers and members of the West Michigan community. Additionally, you will find this to be an educational opportunity for yourself and will be able to develop a deeper understanding of the social injustices hindering our society. Through GVSU’s MLK Jr. Day of Service and Solidarity, you’ll experience how uniting with those around us can bring monumental change and acceptance to our world.
