Are you Grand Valley?

Posted on November 7, 2017

"I Am Grand Valley" is a leadership program that recognizes GVSU student leaders. We are featuring one of these outstanding Lakers, Marisa Kahnt, to demonstrate how being a leader at Grand Valley is a valuable experience. Determined by students who nominate one another based on leadership skills, we limit the number of nominations to 10 students per nominator. Nominations are accepted in Winter semester.

What is "I am Grand Valley?”

Coordinated by the Office of Student Life, "I am Grand Valley" is a leadership recognition program for GVSU students. Since 2003, the program has celebrated student leaders who display and utilize strong leadership skills that contribute to the campus and beyond.  As essential elements of the University community, these students include student employees, leaders in student organizations, resident assistants, students that excel in the classroom, and so on. Faculty, staff, and students make nominations through a simple, noncompetitive process that is designed to include many students. The popular I am Grand Valley t-shirts given to and worn by these students encourages campus involvement and student leadership.

I am GV Spotlight: Marisa Kahnt, Junior

Marisa is a liberal studies student with an emphasis in leadership. She serves as the Vice President of Phi Mu Fraternity; she is a fellow in the Cook Leadership Academy; and she works in the Dean of Students Office and the Office of Student Life on campus, helping with leadership development and programming.

Marisa was nominated for I Am GV because she encourages others around campus and is known for inspiring leadership qualities in her peers. This compassion and servant leadership has truly set her apart.

Marisa Kahnt

“My leadership style is to celebrate people, watch them grow, and create that ripple effect. Because when one of us shines, we all shine.” — Marisa Kahnt

Across campus, several emerging student leaders earn recognition for their mature attitudes, numerous achievements, and positive and impactful relationships within the Grand Valley Community. Last year, over 1000 student leaders were nominated for the "I Am Grand Valley" award. While their experiences and strengths differ greatly, they all share one thing in common; all have impacted and served Grand Valley’s community in a positive way, and should be honored for their influence on campus.

For the Fall 2017 semester, nominations open October 31, 2017 and close November 30, 2017.

After you nominate, save the date for January 24, 2018 and join us for a reception honoring the nominees. Light refreshments will be provided!
