Recognize the Leaders Among Us!
Do you know a fantastic student leader who deserves recognition? Maybe they’re the president of your student organization, a rockstar member in your study group, or the Resident Assistant who has always been there for you. We make it really easy for you to recognize these amazing individuals. If you know an awesome student leader, nominate them for I Am Grand Valley to recognize their hard work.
Across campus, several emerging student leaders deserve recognition for their mature attitudes, numerous achievements, and impactful relationships within the Grand Valley community. Last year there were over 1,000 student leaders nominated for the I Am Grand Valley campaign. While their experiences and strengths differ greatly, they all share one thing in common: they have impacted and served Grand Valley’s community in a positive way. With this campaign, we are honoring them for their influence on this campus.
I am GV Spotlight: Anya Ward, Junior
Anya is an entrepreneur and marketing student with a minor in philosophy. She is involved in Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, co-leads a black Christian Bible study, and serves as the Community Chair of Grand Valley’s NAACP. She also works for the Office of Student Life as a 2020 Desk Assistant and a member of Student Life’s Street Team. She is especially involved with students of color and loves making these students know they are heard and seen on campus and that they are at home at Grand Valley. Anya was nominated for I Am Grand Valley because she emphasizes community in all of her roles on campus.
“Leadership is serving people. I think that when you’re a leader, it is about serving people well, loving and caring for people well… I look for ways to care for people and go out of my way to make people feel comfortable and find community on campus and in the world in general.
Being a leader is sometimes being a friend to people.” —Anya Ward
What is "I am Grand Valley?”
Coordinated by the Office of Student Life, I am Grand Valley is a leadership recognition program for GVSU students. Since 2003, the program has celebrated student leaders who display and utilize strong leadership skills that contribute to the campus and beyond. As essential elements of the University community, these students include student employees, leaders in student organizations, resident assistants, students who excel in the classroom, and so on. Faculty, staff, and students make nominations through a simple, noncompetitive process that is designed to include many students. The popular I am Grand Valley t-shirts given to and worn by these students encourages campus involvement and student leadership.
Nominations close November 30, 2017.
After you nominate, save the date for January 24, 2018 and join us for a reception honoring the nominees. Light refreshments will be provided!
