Federal Tuition Tax Credits
Several education tax benefits are available to lessen the financial burdens of higher education. The 2009 stimulus law introduced the following changes to college tax credits:
The American Opportunity Tax Credit (a modification of the Hope credit)
The American Opportunity Tax Credit has been extended through 2012. The credit is available to a broader range of taxpayers, including many with higher incomes and those who owe no tax. The credit may be claimed for qualified expenses paid for any of the first four years of post-secondary education and covers qualified tuition, related fees, books and other required course materials.
The Lifetime Learning Credit
The Lifetime Learning Credit allows eligible taxpayers who are not eligible for the American opportunity tax credit to claim a tax credit against their federal income tax for qualified tuition and related expenses.
