Project Goals
Grand Valley State University's School of Social Work has developed a study abroad trip to China. The China trip is centered around three goals: developing a global perspective in social work practice, enriching multi-cultural experience, and increasing awareness of interconnectedness between China and the United States.
Description
During this 17-day trip, students will begin their visit in Shanghai. Students will learn the history of Shanghai, along with economic, political, and cultural dynamics by visiting some social work agencies. Students will also be introduced to China's One Child policy and learn about rural development. Visits to a children's home, elder's home, hospital, community center, and Shanghai welfare department will also be incorporated into the trip. Finally, students will travel by train to Beijing to witness how Chinese shape their culture and personality.
Social Work Practice
Social work practice is a key concept of the trip. During the trip, students will learn how Chinese serve children and the elderly in Shanghai. Medical social work roles and functions in the hospital will be taught, as well as how the Chinese design and develop a loving and caring ommunity. Students will learn how the welfare department plans and delivers human services. Students will also meet with social work students from East China University Science and Technology School of Social Sciences.
