  • Stuff I am currently recommending to my friends are: the music CDs Walking With the Beggar Boys by Elfpower (retro-pop)and Live: Going Home by the Blasters (rockabilly); the book Lost Christianities: The Battle for Scripture and the Faiths We Never Knew by Bart D. Ehrman; the DVDs of two short-lived TV series "American Gothic" ("evil" becomes sheriff of Trinity, South Carolina) and "Over There" (neither pro-war nor anti-war, but a tribute to the troops fighting in a new kind of war); the movies-on-DVD The Revolution Will Not be Televised and State of Mind (which provide fascinating and needed insight into Venezuelan and North Korean societies).
  • People are often surprised to find out that I ... went to Catholic school for 15 years and was never an alter boy.
  • My favorite pig-out food is ... pasta anything.
  • My best advise to students is ... take skill-building courses like GIS and grant writing.
  • When I first came to Grand Rapids, I was surprised by ... (1) how good Bosnian food is; (2) how often the power goes out; (3) how many native Michiganders (Michiganians? Michiganites?) own cabins up north; and (4) lack of Mr. Hero sandwich shops (and way too many Big Boys).
