Greg Cline received his PhD in Political Science from Michigan State University in 2001. His focus then and since has been on state and community-level social change efforts, with a primary focus on the issue areas of health and public health. Born and raised in Toledo (north of Old State Line road making him a Michigander had the "Toledo War" of 1835-1836 gone in Michigan's favor), Greg attended the University of Toledo before and after a four year tour in the U.S. Army. He received a BS degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Political Science, Economics & Korean) in 1990.

After moving to Michigan "just to go to graduate school" Greg never figured out how to move on, and no longer wants to. "Michigan is a beautiful state, with plenty of things to do year round to keep me interested," he reports. He took a leave of absence from his graduate studies in 1995 and took full time employment at the Michigan Public Health Institute, where he eventually rose to become a Senior Program Director, focusing on program evaluation, public health and health policy analysis, demonstration projects and applied research projects. Prior to coming to Grand Valley, Greg spent two years working for the home office of Trinity Health (Novi, Michigan) as the system wide grant writer. He also founded the Michigan Journal of Public Health, a peer reviewed journal published twice a year by the Michigan Public Health Association. He remains the editor of this journal.

When he's not paying attention to his work at Grand Valley, Greg enjoys being with his family, spending as much time out of doors as possible, and reading. History, biography, military history and science fiction are the mainstay of his book collection, although he follows news events extensively on line almost every day. Greg and his wife Kelly also collect films, and have a broad ranging collection from almost every era of filmmaking since the introduction of sound to film. After many years Greg has learned to enjoy deer hunting and the annual pilgrimages this entails for hunters each Autumn.

Greg is happily married to a wonderfully patient and remarkably humorous woman named Kelly, and has three children, Eva, Ellisif and Miles. They live (mostly) quietly in a rural area near Grand Ledge, Michigan.

  • The movie I am currently recommending to my friends are ... Any movie based on Jane Austen's novels, because these are disgustingly timeless and I wish I were an Austen heir
  • People are surprised to find out that I ... have kids whose ages are 20, 16 and 5
  • My favorite pig-out food is ... peanut butter, butter & grape jam (on three slices of bread, with some kind of chips on the side)
  • My best advise to students is ... read early, read often, ask questions in the same manner.
  • When I first came to Grand Rapids, I was surprised by ... how cool a city it was
