Penning Teaches PR in France
Professor Tim Penning will teach at ESSCA, a partner institution of Grand Valley in Angers, France during the week of October 8. Penning will teach two sessions, one on public relations generally and one on press relations in particular. While there, he also hopes to identify opportunities for French students to study at GVSU and for Grand Valley students to study PR and business in France. Panel to Discuss Blogging and Nonprofit Organizations
Professor Tim Penning will appear on a panel to discuss the various facets of blogging as it relates to nonprofit organizations. The panel is part of the bi-annual NonProfit PR Workshop organized by the West Michigan Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Wiese Delivers Debate Skills to Chicago Public Schools
Professor Danielle R. Wiese served as an Instructor and Volunteer Director of Curriculum this summer at the Chicago Debate Summer Institute.  The Institute brings public speaking, argument, and research skills to over 100 students from the Chicago public schools.  This season, high school debaters around the country will discuss US health care efforts in Sub Saharan Africa. Anton Wins Walter Benjamin Award
Professor Corey Anton received the 2007 Walter Benjamin Award for Outstanding Article in the Field of Media Ecology. The award was for his manuscript, "Playing With Bateson: Denotation, Logical Types and Analog and Digital Communication," published in a special issue on Gregory Bateson in The American Journal of Semiotics. Summer Film Project Completes Filming on First Feature-Length Film
The Summer Film Project at GVSU has produced a short feature films during the past six years. In 2007 they went to the next level and tackled a feature-length project: “To Live and Die in Dixie.” Post production is currently underway, with a premiere of the finished film planned for April. Roberts Exhibit Planned for This Fall
Professor Kim Roberts exhibit “Focus on the Family” is opening on September 25 and running through November 29 at Grand Rapids’ newest exhibit space—Open Concept Gallery. The interactive exhibit includes videotaped interviews with individuals whose stories of love, childhood memories, and the passion for life tragically include recollections of murder, assault, and intimidation due to their sexual orientation. Two panel discussions related to the exhibit will be held: October 10 at the Amway Grand Plaza, "The Power of Art?" will address how/if art can make a positive impact on change for the social good; October 25 at GVSU, "A Look in the Mirror: Reflections on Intolerance" will review the impact of hate crime on homosexual citizens. Roberts to Serve as Co-Chair of Triangle Foundation Annual Dinner
As a result of her work on the “Focus on the Family” video installation, Professor Kim Roberts has been invited to serve as a Co-Chair, along with State Senator Buzz Thomas (D-Detroit), for the Triangle Foundation¹s 13th Annual Dinner. This dinner is a major fundraising event for Triangle Foundation, which is Michigan¹s leading victim services and advocacy organization for the state’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Based in Detroit, they have recently expanded to West Michigan and have an office in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  The state dinner event will take place on September 29, 2007. Morse to Be on Jury for International Animation Contest
Professor Deanna Morse will be a member of the jury for the International Animation Contest co-sponsored by ASIFA, the international animation association and ToonBoom Software. The contest is connected to the worldwide celebrations of International Animation Day, which is October 29th. This day was selected to commemorate the first public projection of moving art by Emile Reynaud, in Paris, at the Theatre Optique in 1892. International Animation Day will be observed with hundreds of events in over 50 countries around the world. GVSU will have a screening of international short films on October 30, 7PM, in 176 LMH. Libman Travels for Theatre Performance and Presentation
Professor Karen Libman spent the summer onthe go. She presented a workshop in New York in April on "Teaching as Performance" at the Drama Across the Curriculum Conference at NYU. In June she attended the Last FrontierTheatre Festival in Valdez, Alaska, where she participated as an actor(!) in staged readings. July took her to Hong Kong for the International Drama Education Association Tri-Annual World Congress. In addition to seeing plays from all over the world, she presented a paper on her work with storytelling theatre and narrative therapy.

Film/Video Student Wins Animation Competition
Kari Smith, a Grand Valley senior from Stockbridge, Mich., is the winner of the 12th International Helen Victoria Haynes World Peace Storyboard and Animation Scholarship Competition, based in Chicago. Her entry, "The Message," won based on a storyboard presentation. She received $500 to produce an animation based on her entry. A trophy plaque for Grand Valley and $1,000 will be awarded Smith upon completion of her animation within the next year. It will be screened as part of the Kalamazoo Animation Festival International awards ceremony in 2008. Her award will be announced at this year's KAFI awards screening on Sunday, May 20, at 4:30 p.m. at the State Theatre in Kalamazoo. Learn more about the award online: www.hvh-worldpeace.org

 

PR Students Intern at Oscar DeLa Renta
Grand Valley’s PR program has made waves in the fashion industry. This past summer, Alyssa Ruedisueli was the second GVSU PR major to intern at Oscar de la Renta in New York City. Oscar de la Renta is a legend in the fashion industry, known for his delicate and opulent designs. She applied and interviewed for the internship after being recommended by a previous ODLR intern and GVSU graduate Lynsey Roumell, now employed at Grand Rapids PR firm Wondergem Consulting.

Theatre Major Gets Prestigious Technical Internship
Theatre major Megan Thompson has embarked on a prestigious technical theatre internship at one of the nation’s most acclaimed professional stages, the Actors Theatre of Louisville.  Megan is working directly with department managers and staff, receiving valuable hands-on training in administration or technical theatre, and taking leadership positions on Apprentice/Intern Company projects throughout the season.  She'll alsol be directly involved in the famous Humana Festival, which receives over 3,000 new scripts annually. Over 30 foreign countries are normally represented at the festival each year, and more than 90 million Americans have seen productions of the plays initiated at Actors Theatre. ATL presents nearly 600 performances of about 30 productions during its year-round season composed of a diverse array of contemporary and classical fare. It boasts one of the largest per capita subscription audiences in the country and! logs an annual attendance of over 200,000 patrons.

Max Bush Dramas of Chinese Policies To Be Featured at CMU Conference
Theatre alumnus Max Bush’s work on China’s recent policies of torture and imprisonment against religious practitioners will soon be featured in a conference to be held at Central Michigan University later this fall. Bush, a nationally acclaimed playwright, has seen his work widely published and produced in the U.S. and abroad. His 2006 drama, KARA IN BLACK, dealing with human rights protests among high school students in contemporary America, recently received the prestigious Distinguished Play Award by the American Alliance for Theatre & Education.  Scenes from his current play on the Chinese persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, FROM EVERY MOUNTAINSIDE, will form the centerpiece of the Central Michigan’s weekend conference; and Bush himself will lead a workshop on the scandalous complicity of the Internet company Yahoo in rounding-up and torturing critics of Chinese government oppression.
