James Vaughn

James Vaughn (Visiting Professor): James is a symbolic interactionist who prefers to conduct ethnographic research of culture. He has earned a bachelor’s degree and his masters degree from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. His research focuses on the culture of the power elites of society, especially the socialization processes which help promote social cohesion amongst elites within the Bohemian Club of California. James has taught as an adjunct instructor at GVSU, in writing and sociology, for four years prior to becoming a visiting professor here. Current research focuses on elite ideological formation through the arts in the Bohemian Club, as well as normative elite deviance. He is a proud grandfather of Connor Erasmus Vaughn. James was formerly a professional cyclist, luthier, and architectural stained glass artisan. He is currently in his fourth year of doctoral studies at Western Michigan University and expects to complete the Ph.D. in 2010.
