Paul Riopelle as Hamlet in Hamlet

Paul Riopelle as Provost with Alum Michael Empson in Measure for Measure

separated by a terrible shipwreck are rescued and brought to mythical Illyria, where Viola disguises herself as a boy to gain employment as the page of Duke Orsino. On Viola’s first errand (delivering the Duke’s love letter to his beloved Countess Olivia), the Countess falls madly in love with disguised Viola. Meanwhile, Viola has fallen madly in love with Duke Orsino. Sebastian arrives and the confusion builds to a memorable climax with some of Shakespeare’s most beautiful songs, most enchanting characters, and most delightful pranks.
As always, the Mainstage festival production features visiting professional guest artists, regional artists, and Grand Valley students. This year, the festival welcomes back guest actor Paul Riopelle who appeared before for the Shakespeare Festival as Jacques in last year’s As You Like It  and also previously as Hamlet in 2006’s Hamlet and as the Provost in 2005’s Measure for Measure. Additionally, GVSU and Shakespeare Festival alum Scott Lange, who appeared as both Dukes in As You Like It returns to play Sir Toby Belch. Local actor Christopher Weaver, who played Elbow in Measure for Measure, Claudius in Hamlet, Boyet in Love’s Labour’s Lost, and Jachimo in Cymbeline also returns to play the malcontent Malvolio. Other guest artists include Production Stage Manager Jennifer Sears, and Grand Valley music faculty member Pablo MahaveVeglia.
