What is Helping Hands?

Administrators, faculty members, staff members, student organizations, and alumni participate in our housing move-in week by serving as volunteers for the Helping Hands program. This group of dedicated volunteers assists students with the following during move-in week: directing traffic, carrying supplies from cars to student rooms, assisting new students with check-in, and welcoming students and their families to campus. We are very proud of the Helping Hands program and the fact that the campus community is fully engaged in the student housing move-in process. We thank our volunteers for their helping hand.

Why is Helping Hands so important?

For first year students, research indicates that the first six weeks at college are critical to retention and student satisfaction; the first few days being the most important. We want to make the beginning of the fall semester a positive and inclusive experience for our students by having a strong faculty/staff presence during housing move-in.

How Can I Sign Up to Volunteer?

Faculty/Staff – sign up to volunteer by filling out the online registration form here. You will receive a confirmation of your registration and our team will contact you late July, early August about assignments.

Students – sign up to volunteer to lend a helping hand during Grand Valley’s three days of fall move in, August 20–22, by signing up here. Contact the Office of Student Life at (616) 331-2345 with any questions.

Local Organizations and Neighbors – Although we appreciate the support of local organizations and neighbors, we are only able to accommodate volunteer time from faculty members, staff members, student organization members, and alumni. As a part of Laker Days, the Community Service Learning Center and Laker Leadership Programs are hosting a showcase of upcoming opportunities for GVSU students. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how you can get involved, meet the CSLC & LLP students & staff, and meet other students who are passionate about serving their community & making a difference on campus!

Our staff will also be available to answer any questions about the Service Saturday, held the following day at 9am.

About Laker Days

Laker Days is a series of "welcome back to school" activities offered by registered student organizations and campus departments. All students are encouraged to partipate as we say goodbye to summer and usher in a new academic year! (URL is listed above!)

The First Service Saturday of the Fall 2012 semester will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2012 and is specifically for new and transfer students.

The Non-Profit Volunteer and Internship Fair is an opportunity for students to connect with various agencies in the greater Grand Rapids area.  Up to 50 agencies offering volunteer and/or internship opportunities will be present!Resumes and business attire are not required but may be appropriate for those looking for internships.

The First Year Service Experience is an overnight trip exclusive to first-year students of GVSU.  Each year we take 24 students out into the Grand Rapids, Michigan area to make a difference in the community. Students enjoy getting to know new people while participating in an intense 24-36 hour experience packed with learning, fellowship, and service.  Interested?

350+ students head to over 20 worksites around the Grand Rapids community to help make a difference!  Join us in this national day of service.

National Day of Service where volunteers across America serve in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  GVSU's service project is coordinated by the CSLC and the MLK Week Executive Planning Committee. The goal of the event is to educate students about the Civil Rights movement as well as inspire them to serve their communities in the spirit of social change. Faculty, Staff, and Students will be serving at multiple work sites around Grand Rapids and Allendale.

Our overnight service trip is designed for any student at GVSU.  Three times a year we take 24 students out into the Grand Rapids area to make a difference in the community. Friday evenings are spent taking time getting to know each other, hanging out, and having fun.  We also take time to learn exactly what "service learning" really is.  Saturday we head out to our organization and serve all day there.  Are you looking to get to know new people, have a great time, and get some service hours in??  Then this trip is for you!

This award winning week of service is aimed at uniting Lakers from around the globe in providing volunteer support and outreach to their communities in ways meaningful to each individual or group. This is a joint effort between the GVSU Alumni Association and the Community Service Learning Center.  Volunteering has no boundaries. To broaden our Laker impact, all alumni Clubs and Chapters, students, as well as faculty/staff are encouraged to coordinate and/or participate in a community service project during this week in the name of Grand Valley.
