Want to learn more about your community and the public issues in Grand Rapids? Interested in changing the dialogue in your community? Want to exercise your civic responsibility?

Participate in a year long experience of reporting on one of three public issues (Immigration, Police Community Relations, or Development in relation to Gentrification) through The Rapidian. Along with the yearlong commitment, students will be asked to attend Civic Reporter Trainings, one Democracy 101 event per month, and publish two multimedia pieces per semester.

What to Expect

Research, write and publish 2 stories  

  • 1 breaking news story
  • 1 enterprise story

Attend Meetings and Trainings

  • 1 Newsroom Meeting / month (dates TBD with students during Kick Off)
    • Students will work with faculty adviser and Rapidian staff in workshop format to craft and edit stories. 
  • 1 Democracy 101 session / month

Civic Reporters Bureau

Choose from one of the three local "beats" below to research and report on:

- Police/Community Relations

- Immigration

- Development / Gentrification

Each student "beat" will be assigned to a faculty / staff adviser to provide one on one support for research, writing and publishing process. 

Opportunity to Attend Civic Learning Conference

Students who make the commitment to become a GVSU Civic Reporter will have the opportunity to apply for partial funding to their support attendance at the 2018 Campus Compact Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana (3/25-3/28).
