Day of Caring & Stuff the Bus!

United Way Day of Caring- Volunteer with GVSU!

GVSU is participating in the United Way’s Day of Caring on September 9th. You will be joined in service with millions of others across the nation in conjunction with the 3nd annual National Day of Service. It will be a memorable day! GVSU faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in the 3 projects listed below.

Morning Projects 9:00a-12:00p
Grounds Work at Blanford Nature Center (1715 Hillburn Avenue, Grand Rapids, 49504).  The details of this project are not finalized yet, but could include clearing viewing areas and building platforms along trails for photography, trail maintenance, or painting their barns.  It will be outdoor work.  GV will be providing gloves and other tools and supplies provided by the site. 12 GVSU volunteers are needed and transportation will be provided to this site.

Stuff the Bus at Hillcrest School (1300 Lyon Grand Rapids, 49505).  Volunteers will sort school supplies collected through the Stuff the Bus project and sort them into boxes for distribution to schools. SOH staff will be on hand to organize project and assist volunteers. 4 Volunteers are needed.  Transportation will not be provided to this site. 

Afternoon Project 1:30p-4:30p
Celebration on the Grand - Registration, Security, Event Setup/Delivery (Rosa Park & Ahnabawen Park, Grand Rapids, 49504).  The REGISTRATION position helps volunteers "check in" and report to their positions.  SECURITY will be for the volunteer parking lot, Firework Bridge, and Perimeter.  EVENT SETUP will help set up equipment, set up tables, and chairs.  ICE DELIVERY will visit vendor booths and ask if ice is needed, if so, will deliver the ice. 12 volunteers needed.  Transportation will be provided for this site. 

GIVE!  Help us STUFF THE BUS!
Stuff the Bus is a community-wide collection of school supplies for Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS).
Suggested school supplies for donation: Lined paper, Pencils, Colored pencils, Erasers, Crayons, Glue sticks, Markers, Blue and black pens, 2 pocket folders, Stickers, 3 ring binders, 1"-1.5". Monetary donations will also be accepted and donated to the Stuff the Bus efforts.  Please contact the Community Service Learning Center to make a donation. GVSU Collection dates: August 24- September 7. 

Drop off locations:

  • Allendale Campus- Kirkhof Center lobby (near the 2020 Information Desk), Community Service Learning Center (1110 Kirkhof Center), Recreation Center, and Facilities Services.
  • Pew Campus (Grand Rapids)- Pew Campus Book Store and 101 Eberhardt Center.

Make a donation by cash or check: Stop by the Community Service Learning Center or Office of Student Life.  Checks should be made out to Grand Valley State University (in the memo line, please write "Stuff the Bus donation").  GVSU will present the United Way with one check at the end of our collection.
