The Arts: Durwin Talon and Guin Thompson "NASA Fine Arts Program - An Appreciation"

Session 1, 9 a.m.:

Abstract: In 1962, NASA established the NASA Art Program in order to interpret and record the history of space exploration. For over 50 years, artists have been invited to respond to, record and communicate NASA’s growing technological and scientific breakthroughs. Artists such as Norman Rockwell, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and Annie Liebowitz have participated in furthering the public’s understanding of space and created works ranging from portraiture and educational illustrations, to more abstract works based in the wonder, tragedy and triumph of exploring our universe. This presentation will present a selection of works from the archives and discuss the connection between scientific and artistic observation.
