Society: Jessica Webb "Teams in Space: Charting the New Frontier"

Session 2, 10 a.m.:

Abstract:  In the next thirty years, NASA aims to send a team of astronauts to explore Mars. This small team will live in a confined space for approximately three years as they travel to and from the red planet. Three years of living in isolation with only a few other individuals could negatively impact team functioning. To understand the factors that affect team functioning, we study teams in analog environments, or habitats that simulate the conditions of long-term space flight. In this presentation, we will discuss our ongoing research of teams in isolated, confined, and extreme environments with a focus on the features of these habitats and how we measure team functioning in them.
